Many scholars regard the Kui-long as a variant of the dragon. This mythical creature can be found decorated on some of the most impressive surviving objects from the Chinese Bronze Age. Delicately sculpted in relief, the Kui-long motif decorates the borders of this piece in style and modernity.

Carved through with dragon patterns, porcelain pieces like this were especially popular during the Kangxi reign, and represented the pinnacle of Qing ceramics. Borrowing the same motif from the fragrance censer, the dragon carvings adorn this photoframe in relief, accentuating the artistic style of this era.
