The camellia flower is associated with chastity and used in Buddhist rituals, especially in consecration ceremonies where the Lotus Sutra is chanted. Camellia trees are grown on the grounds of Buddhist monasteries. The flowers are also used as decoration during Chinese New Year. Decorated with beautifully incised camellia flowers, the lid of the lacquer box displays high level Ming dynasty craftsmanship, with its precise knife-work and smooth finishing. The elaborately carved flowers are reproduced on a trinket box.
