The Bi disc or circular jade with a hole in the middle, can be traced to the Neolithic period. According to Chinese scholars, this symbolised the sky or the sun’s orbit, and was used in ritualistics ceremonies. This distinctive jade Bi disc from the Southern Song dynasty is one of the precious collections of the Museum. Its grain patterns have been reproduced onto the pewter cufflinks.

This interesting ruyi shaped ceramic pillow has a curvilinear outline, a slight depression in the middle and gourd shaped holes at the sides. Made during the Yuan dynasty, the bottom of the pillow is engraved with a poem by Emperor Qianlong. The unique shape derived from the lingzhi fungus, also known as the plant of immortality, makes for an interesting cufflink design.
