Possessing the hardness of stone but the soft glistening sheen of water, jade has been used in Chinese culture for more than eight thousand years. The finely carved round jade box dated between the Southern Song and Yuan dynasties, is decorated with cloud patterns. Conveying auspiciousness, these patterns are boldly featured on the cover of the pewter tea caddy.

Appreciated for its translucent glaze and jade-like coating, celadon is one of the earliest forms of Chinese porcelain. The three-legged Longquan incense burner can be traced back to the 12th to 14th centuries, during the Southern Song to Yuan dynasties. Its form takes after the Li, an ancient ritual bronze vessel. Borrowing elements from this finely made piece, the pewter tea caddy takes on the bulbous form and the intricately carved finial.
