Considering the prevailing taste of the day for pomposity, the design style of the Wiener Werkstätte was revolutionary. Formed at the cusp of the 20th century, this collective of artists, designers and craftspeople championed an elegant aesthetic driven by function and relevance, exhibiting parallels with England’s Arts & Crafts movement, the Scottish School, and Japanese art and design. Named in tribute, Vienna adopts the collective’s preference for a bold use of line in combination with restrained yet seductive decoration.
