TheexuberantArtDecostyle, dominant in the 1920s and 30s, influenced every sphere of design from fashion and entertainment to architecture, interiors and industrial design, some resulting in a level of luxury unmatched to this day. In Streamline , a collaboration between Royal Selangor and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the stylish reinterpretation of a motif from a MarionDorn (1889 – 1964) rugof 1935 in the museum’s collections captures the era’s overlapping obsession with glamour, function and technological modernity in a range of strikingly elegant home accessories.

William Morris

A leading member of the 19th century Arts and Crafts Movement, Englishman William Morris’ (1834- 1896) legacy cannot be understated. A master in many disciplines of design, he is perhaps most celebrated for his glorious patterns, many of which remain popular to this day.

When filled, wine shows through the selectively pierced grape and vine motif encircling the decanter.

Morris’ grape and vine motif envelops the elegantly proportioned bottle chiller. Removing the liner, which traps an insulating layer of air to keep your bottle chilled, aids cleaning and turns the pewter chiller into a vase.

Morris’ elaborate grape and vine motif swathes the finial of the bottle stopper.

Grapes and vines form a ring around the pourer, which includes a cork and pewter stopper.

A band of grapes and vines circles the rim of the brightly polished funnel, designed to launch wine horizontally against the decanter’s neck. A sieve to catch any lees or cork fragments is included.

Tracery

Tracery is inspired by Gothic architecture. A style prevalent from the 12th to the 16th centuries, its signatures include pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and an impression of verticality, and is a style most often associated with the great ecclesiastical buildings of Europe. Imposing from the outside, Gothic interiors are transformed by windows in delicate, almost filigree tracery in stonework, metal and glass into uplifting spaces of light and wonder, a triumph of medieval design and engineering.
