Vienna

The design style of the Wiener Werkstätte was revolutionary, considering the prevailing taste of the day for pomposity.

This collective of artists, designers and craftspeople formed at the cusp of the 20th century, championed an elegant aesthetic driven by function and relevance, exhibiting parallels with England’s Arts Crafts movement, the Scottish School, and Japanese art and design.

Vienna, named in tribute, adopts the collective’s preference for bold use of line in combination with restrained yet seductive decoration.

Bar

Distinctly 20th century, the mid-century style is as nostalgic as it is futuristic. Deriving from the Bauhaus movement by way of Internationalism, the sleek modernity of the design style reflects the confidence of the post-war era. The Bar collection parlays the exuberant architectural, interiors and graphic design style of the mid 20th century into an array of bar accessories, made for entertaining and the enjoyment of that mid-century requisite, the cocktail.

Rounds Rounds drinking set consists of six cups that nest into each other, each waiting to be filled in turn, resembling a circle of friends with arms around shoulders. Six rounds of drinks to be grateful for, whether it is a virtual afternoon catch up with friends, or an afterhours six way game of 21. Companionship fills the heart and a joyful mood permeates the air, whether the choice of libation is a fiery baijiu , a mellow whisky, or a serene Dragon Well tea.

The Right Way to Muddle

How to Shake a Cocktail

Choose a sturdy mixing glass, a pint glass or a shaker tin.

Hold the shaker with both hands and shake vigorously in a horizontal motion over your shoulder. Shake for a slow count of ten or until the outside of the shaker frosts up.

Place fruits, sugar, leaves or herbs into the glass, along with any other necessary ingredients the recipe calls for.

Strain your cocktail into a chilled glass. Remember to strain over fresh ice when preparing drinks served on the rocks.

Savoy

In selecting London’s celebrated Savoy hotel as inspiration, Jarrod Lim channels its landmark refurbishment in 1920 when it shook off its late Victorian demeanour and embraced the sensational art moderne aesthetic of the Jazz Age, enhancing its reputation for impeccable style, cutting edge luxury and glamour. Sensual fluting, voluptuous forms, and visual references to tortoiseshell, patination and lacquer, typical of the era’s penchant for luxury materials and finishes, enliven the suave Savoy collection, capturing the iconic hotel’s Art Deco spirit.

Streamline

The exuberant Art Deco style, dominant in the 1920s and 30s, influenced every sphere of design from fashion and entertainment to architecture, interiors and industrial design - some resulting in a level of luxury unmatched to this day. In Streamline, a collaboration between Royal Selangor and the Victoria Albert Museum, London, the stylish reinterpretation of a motif from a Marion Dorn (1889 - 1964) rug of 1935 in the museum’s collections captures the era’s overlapping obsession with glamour, function and technological modernity in a range of strikingly elegant home accessories.

About Marion Dorn

Marion Dorn came to England from San Francisco in the early 1920s. By the mid-1930s she was acclaimed as a leading freelance textile designer.

She carried out commissions for the London hotels Claridge’s and The Savoy, and the ocean liners Orion and the Queen Mary.

Five Blessings

The Five Blessings collection features five graceful stylised bat motifs. The pronunciation of bat in Chinese is a homophone for ’blessings’, and considered as an auspicious animal. The motif of the five bats refers to wufu or the ‘five blessings’ which include longevity, prosperity, health and virtue. The auspiciousness of the collection is further enhanced by other complementary elements: clouds representing good fortune; the lingzhi motif immortality and the fulfilment of wishes; the peony blossom wealth and honour, whilst the lotus petal border is a pun for harmony. The fu character which means ‘joy’ in Chinese, stylised in a traditional roundel, marks every item.

Frost is inspired by the ethereal beauty of ice, sculpted by wind and water. Lewis Chess Set

Our Lewis chess set is populated by a cast of intriguing characters, replicas of walrus-ivory originals selected from the museum’s collection.

The king sits steadfast, the sword across his knees implying unbiased justice. By his side, his queen poses in an expression of compassion. Bishops in full regalia attend them, as do knights astride sturdy ponies, while fearsome berserker warriors play the role of rooks Pawns are represented by upright slabs carved with elaborate scrollwork. Opposing sides, in pewter differentiated by a glimmering polish and a dark matt finish, face each other across a chessboard in nyatoh, scorched with an interwoven knot motif from the king’s throne. Unearthed on the Isle of Lewis in 1831, in the wilderness of Scotland’s remote Outer Hebrides, the 12th century Lewis chessmen are exquisitely carved in walrus ivory and very likely of Scandinavian origin. Of the seventy-eight pieces known today, the British Museum’s collection of sixty-seven is one of its most popular attractions.

Sense

We live in a world that clamours for attention and where a work-life balance is precarious at best. It’s no wonder that relaxation, peace of mind and calmness have become precious commodities. The Sense collection cannot claim to banish the hurly-burly of modern life utterly. With its undulating motif, alluding variously to Japanese raked stone gardens, ripples on water, tendrils of aroma, and soothing tones, it intends to provide a modicum of quietude through a selection of carefully curated items.

Celestial Wisdom

The pursuit of happiness is a journey driven by an inspiring example that pushes us to start exciting new endeavours and relationships that add a richer dimension to our lives. Often, inspiration wears many faces, spans many centuries, and lives big and small. Royal Selangor taps into ancient wisdom and pays tribute to the iconic thinker, Confucius (551- 479 BC) in Celestial Wisdom. Before Confucius’ era, education was the privilege of the aristocrats. The Great Teacher and Sage was an early proponent of making it available to the masses for their self improvement. Based on the original sculptures in Mr Chiang Yi-tze’s 40-year-old private works, Royal Selangor has brought Confucius and his disciples to life and given visual sense to the humanistic values which form the basis of a richly rewarding life today.

Game of Thrones

Stylistically, the fictional world portrayed in Game of Thrones bears a strong resemblance to the mid to late medieval period, particularly Europe of the 15th century. It tells the story of the Seven Great Houses that control the land of Westeros against each other. Depicted in the HBO television series and referenced in the novels are plate armour and chain mail, crossbows, pikes, axes and swords, sail-driven seagoing vessels and horse-drawn transport, albeit with elements of functioning magic and living breathing dragons.

Spark Conversations

The interment of a ship at Sutton Hoo represents the most impressive medieval grave to be discovered in Europe.

Create a personal style statement by incorporating some conversation pieces into the home.

It was buried around 625 and unearthed in 1939. Among the treasures found was an iconic Anglo-Saxon helmet, widely believed to have belonged to King Rædwald of East Anglia. The Sutton Hoo helmet is widely regarded as one of the most important Anglo-Saxon artefacts ever found. It is one of only four complete Anglo-Saxon helmets to survive. It was carefully reconstructed from shattered pieces. The helmet’s mouth, nose and eyebrows form the image of a flying beast. Garnets line the eyebrows, but only one is backed with gold foil reflectors, believed to be a reference to the one-eyed god, Woden. Our Warrior tea caddy from The British Museum collection reproduces all of the helmet’s signature decorative features, including the stamped interlacing scrollwork and the ‘Dancing Warrior’ and ‘Fallen Warrior’ motifs.

It instantly makes a room interesting, attracts attention and sparks conversation.

Passive Sound Amplifiers

Iridescent Motifs with Niobium

The Phonos collection explores the low-tech amplification of sound via a combination of warm wood and richly textured pewter.

The Splendour Plaque focuses on the peacock’s most defining feature, its magnificent tail in full display.

It amplifies sound without the use of electricity.

The meticulously sculpted pewter is set off against a satin finish black timber background.

Phonos works like a trumpet by changing the impedance of the air around the speaker to maximise the efficiency of the music from your mobile phone.

The main highlight is the feathers’ distinctive eyespots which are replicated in niobium, a rare metal that becomes dazzlingly iridescent when anodised.

91

Decanter & Beverage Glass with Cooling Coasters

Comic Cover Art in 3D

The Frost collection features tumbler and decanter designs that come with cooling coasters.

This modern take on the 1940 publication of Batman #1 is a homage to Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson’s original cover art.

For best cooling results, chill the coaster in the freezer, and your preferred beverage in the refrigerator, for an hour before use.

It highlights its landmark status, featuring as it does not only Batman’s origin story but the debut of his infamous foes the Joker and Catwoman, all in a single issue.

The chilled coaster should then keep your drink sufficiently cooled for about 2 hours.

Standing Bell

The Lucky Teapot

With a soothing tone advised by Enryakuji monastery on Japan’s Mount Hiei, the standing bell is believed to influence the body’s chakras through sound, the ultimate intention of which is a sense of well-being.

The story of how the Melon Pot, one of the earliest creations of Royal Selangor’s founder, Yong Koon, made its way back to his descendants is often retold.

It is a story of fate, passion and grit that has allowed the family to recover a piece of its past. The pot is believed to have saved someone’s life during World War II. The pot is notable for its intricacy: each of the 12 segments that make up the body was individually cut from the pewter sheet and carefully hammered into shape in the old way, then soldered together. The melon pot is now in the company’s archival collection. It has spawned a line of reproduction melon-shaped teapots, tea caddies and other melon-shaped products.

Cast in pewter, the bell includes a pebble-shaped stand and a simple mallet, both in strikingly figured yellow pine.
