Benevolence

Ancient Chinese astronomy divides the constellations into four groups corresponding to the cardinal directions, each assigned a mythological creature as guardian; the Azure Dragon of the east, Vermilion Phoenix of the south, White Tiger of the west, and the Black Tortoise of the north. Collectively referred to as 四象 Sixiang or the Four Symbols, with the earliest depictions dated to the 5th millennium BCE, the extraordinary creatures are culturally significant across the civilisations of East Asia. Master sculptor Xu Xiao Yong brings his skills to bear in Benevolence, harnessing the vocabulary of classical Chinese sculpture to interpret the wonder and majesty of the celestial guardians in his inimitable style.

Koi

The pairing of koi and circle may seem random, but the combination stems from symbolism and wordplay beloved of communities and civilisations inextricably linked with the Chinese cultural sphere. Inspiring the design of this unique collection are two popular phrases in the genre. Where 源源不绝 yuán yuán bù jué means ‘a never-ending stream’ or ‘to come forth endlessly’, its first character is a homophone of that for round 圆 as well as for currency 元 . In 年年有余 nián nián y ǒ u yú, translating as ‘always in credit’ or ‘a surplus every year’, the last character shares its pronunciation with that for fish 鱼 and for abundance 裕 . Both customary wishes for long-lasting plenty, they express sentiments shared by peoples across East Asia, and provide latitude for creative yet meaningful interpretation in design.

Five Blessings

Bats, one of the most frequent subjects in Chinese art, testify to the deep-rooted tradition and love of visual puns and wordplay in cultures of the Far East. Known as fú 蝠 , the character for bat is a homophone for ‘blessings’ fú 福 and ‘riches’ fù 富 , and when five bats are depicted, it is an unequivocal reference to w ǔ fù 五福 or the ‘five blessings’, a concept of positive hope for longevity, prosperity, health, virtue, and a peaceful demise of natural causes. The propitiousness of the five bats is emphasised by further iconic symbology. Clouds, representing good fortune and high rank, fill the border design of lotus petals, the lotus plant a pun for harmony. The lingzhi motif symbolises immortality, the peony, wealth and honour. Finally, the fú 福 character, stylised in a traditional roundel, marks every item with joyous sentiment.
