CRYSTALL INE

With light splintering over its angled planes and surfaces, it’s clear where Crystalline draws its inspiration. Jarrod Lim’s design employs the faceted geometry of its namesake in an array of opulent yet thoroughly modern tabletop objects. The collection took top prize in Metals/Metalware category at the inaugural Tableware International Award of Excellence in 2018 . Held during Ambiente, the premier trade fair for consumer goods in Frankfurt, the awards recognise innovation in the tabletop world. Australia designer Jarrod Lim’s career bolted out of the starting gate after graduation, with a stint at the Milan studio of Patricia Urquiola, one of the world’s most in-demand designers, followed by another at the UK’s admired design and furniture brand SCP. In 2007, Jarrod relocated to Singapore, setting up his eponymous consultancy to participate in Asia’s burgeoning embrace of design.

SAVOY

In selecting London’s celebrated Savoy hotel as inspiration, Jarrod Lim channels its landmark refurbishment in 1920, when it shook off its late Victorian demeanour and embraced the sensational art moderne aesthetic of the Jazz Age, enhancing its reputation for impeccable style, cutting edge luxury and glamour. Sensual fluting, voluptuous forms, and visual references to tortoiseshell, patination and laxquer, typical of the era’s penchant for luxury materials and finishes, enliven the suave Savoy collection, capturing the iconic hotel’s Art Deco spirit.

His concept, linked to the idiom zhizhu changle 知足常乐 which translates as ‘He who knows contentment finds happiness’, embraces the propensity in Chinese society to indulge in wordplay. The Serenity collection was a finalist in the IDEA International Design Excellence Awards 2013 by the Industrial Designers Society of America. F IVE ELEMENTS

Evolving over millennia, the Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements of water, fire, wood, metal and earth was developed as a means to understand the interactions between various phenomena. In a more enlightened world, its concept of interconnectedness, and of cause and effect, is still a guide to the restoration of balance and harmony. Designed by Freeman Lau, the collection is enhanced with talismanic representations of the elements. Founder partner of one of Hong Kong’s most acclaimed graphic design consultancies, and a frequent speaker at international design events, Freeman is a recipient of the HKSAR government’s Bronze Bauhinia Star, in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong design.

THE BRITISH MUSEUM

Royal Selangor’s collaborative offering with the British Museum draws on the public institution’s spectacular collection of some 8 million artefacts. Amongst the largest and most comprehensive in existence, the collection covers every continent, documenting the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present. The British Museum, founded in 1753, was the first national public museum in the world. From the outset, it was a museum of the world, for the world, and this idea still lies at the heart of the Museum’s mission today. The Museum’s collection tells the stories of cultures across the world, from the dawn of human history, over two million years ago, to the present.

The latest additions to The British Museum collection are inspired by the iconic Lewis chessmen trove, one of the most popular in the whole of The British Museum’s artefacts. Unearthed on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides in 1831, the 12th century Lewis chessmen are carved in walrus ivory, and very likely of Scandinavian origin. The story of their discovery is full of mystery and intrigue. One of the more well-known stories, relates how a local man found them at a sandbank and small pale little faces staring back at him Shaken and fearing for his safety, he scurried home, thinking they were elves or gnomes. Only his fierce wife made him return to the chamber and retrieve the little ivory figures.

Our Lewis chess set is populated by a cast of intriguing characters, replicas of walrus-ivory originals selected from the museum’s collection. The king sits steadfast, the sword across his knees implying unbiased justice. By his side, his queen poses in an expression of compassion. Bishops in full regalia attend them, as do knights astride sturdy ponies, while fearsome berserker warriors play the role of rooks. Pawns are represented by upright slabs carved with elaborate scrollwork. Opposing sides, in pewter differentiated by a glimmering polish and a dark matt finish, face each other across a chessboard in nyatoh, scorched with an interwoven knot motif from the king’s throne.
